Is digitization making progress at Japanese companies?

In December 2016 and January 2017, the Japan User Association of Information Systems (JUAS) and Nomura Research Institute (NRI) surveyed the awareness of CIOs, IT department heads, and managers of JUAS member companies, and the presidents, directors, and managers of IT subsidiaries on the progress of digitization. This article indicates the features of leading digital companies based on the results of the survey, and suggests measures for implementing reforms for digitization at Japanese companies.

90% responded that digitization at Japanese companies is lagging behind the West

Upon conducting a survey on digitization initiatives, 90% of respondents stated that Japanese companies are lagging behind the West. (39.4% responded "overwhelmingly lagging" and 50% responded "somewhat lagging")

90% of respondents stated that the progress of digitization will have an impact on company management. When asked to give a multiple choice answer about what would be affected at the company, 70.2% stated "Types of products/and services," 66.8% stated "Work styles," 61.1% stated "Speed of decision making," and 58.7% stated "Response at customer contact points."
When asked what technologies they focus on for digitization, the respondents tended to be interested in technologies such as "IoT" and "AI."
