Tokyo, June 1, 2023 - Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; Chairman, President & CEO Shingo Konomoto, “NRI”) has developed a carbon tracing system (NRI-CTS1) to calculate carbon footprint and track greenhouse gas emissions2.

NRI-CTS adheres to the Pathfinder Network ver1 and ver2 technical specifications on information exchanged published by the WBCSD’s Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT) 3. The NRI-CTS prototype completed Connectathon4, an interconnectivity test on those technical specifications, which has been ongoing from April 17, 2023.

With this success, NRI has become one of the first companies in the world with a Pathfinder Network compliant solution, joining the ranks of German-headquartered CircularTree (“CarbonBlock”)5 and US-headquartered Cirrus Nexus (“TrueCarbon”)6. Furthermore, NRI-CTS is now registered as a Pathfinder Network compliant solution in the PACT online Catalog7, a resource where companies that do not develop their own carbon footprint calculation and information sharing solutions will be able to select Pathfinder Network Conformant solutions.

From June 2023, NRI will use NRI-CTS in providing consulting services to Japanese and overseas companies working to comply with European battery regulations and European border carbon adjustment measures to support regulatory compliance preparations. Based on our NRI-CTS development experience, NRI will also provide Pathfinder Network-compatible advisory and connectivity verification services to companies developing their own carbon footprint calculation solutions for their application to the PACT Conformance testing held every month. Furthermore, NRI plans to sequentially provide a commercial service version of NRI-CTS after August 2023, and the version of NRI-CTS for European battery regulations after January 2024.

In the manufacturing industry global supply chain, it is important to have interconnectivity with not only Japanese based, but also other global solutions to share product carbon footprint information across countries. NRI will continue to enhance NRI-CTS following version-up of the Pathfinder Framework/Network by the WBCSD PACT and will continue to strengthen its support for climate change countermeasures by Japanese and overseas companies that are NRI's clients.
