Nomura Research Institute Signs Business Ambition for 1.5°C
Sets Environmental Targets for Limiting Global Warming to 1.5°C
Tokyo, May 8, 2020 - Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (NRI) signed Business Ambition for 1.5°C pledge by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) 1, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) 2 , and We Mean Business 3 for companies to set targets for limiting future global warming to 1.5°C.
The NRI Group targets for limiting future global warming to 2°C were certified by the SBTi in September 2018, and included reducing absolute Scope1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions to 55% by FY2030 from a 2013 base-year, increasing the rate of renewable energy used at data centers to 36% or above, and increasing the monetary ratio of transactions with suppliers that set environmental targets based on SBTi standards to 70% or above.
Despite the many challenges facing renewable energy procurement in Japan, the NRI Group plans to change its target for limiting global warming to 1.5°C, rather than 2°C, while seeking ways to achieve the stable and long-term procurement of renewable energy that meets international standards. This why the NRI Group signed Business Ambition for 1.5°C. As of May 6, 209 companies over the world have signed the commitment, with NRI the 5th company in Japan to do so.
By signing Business Ambition for 1.5°C, NRI will accelerate its efforts toward achieving the SDGs4, while contributing to achieving a sustainable future society by reducing its environmental impact, under the banner of its corporate philosophy of “Dream up the future.”
