TOKYO, January 25, 2019 –Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. (NRI), a leading provider of consulting services and system solutions, was accepted on January 10, 2019 as a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)*1, a global, CEO-led organization of over 200 leading businesses working together to accelerate the transition to a sustainable world. WBCSD’s nearly 200 member companies come from all business sectors and all major economies, representing a combined revenue of more than US$8.5 trillion and with 19 million employees.
Building a sustainable future requires strong efforts by companies to address the social problems highlighted by the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)*2. In WBCSD, companies work to build a sustainable future by joining forces with other member companies from the same industry and other industries to demonstrate leadership in addressing social problems that cannot be solved by the efforts of one company alone. Understanding the global trend toward sustainability, NRI decided to join WBCSD with the aim of promoting business activities that can contribute to these goals.
“As a member of WBCSD we are pleased to be working toward a sustainable future society together with global leading companies.” said NRI President & CEO Shingo Konomoto. “In essence, our NRI corporate philosophy of ‘Dream Up the Future’ is aligned with the approach of the SDGs. Utilizing the strengths and expertise of NRI, we will work together with other WBSCD member companies while aiming to solve social problems and build a sustainable future society through the co-creation of social value.”
“WBCSD is pleased to welcome NRI as our newest member.” said WBCSD President and CEO Peter Bakker. “NRI has expressed a clear commitment towards the creation of a sustainable future, and they are extremely well-placed to support and advance the efforts of WBCSD and its wider membership to realize the transformative ambitions of the SDGs. NRI’s unique business model combines both consulting and IT services and has a key role to play in developing new solutions to complex global challenges such as climate change and the future of work.”
With its entry to WBCSD, NRI is accelerating its efforts toward the achievement of SDGs, while also helping build a sustainable future society under its corporate philosophy to “Dream Up the Future.”
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Some of its prominent recent efforts include publishing the SDG Compass corporate action guide, and the CEO Guide to the SDGs which provides explanations of the SDGs geared toward CEOs.
